Slipstreamers Seaside Success

Posted 06/05/08

On Saturday May 3rd a team from Hillingdon Slipstreamers youth cycling club travelled to Portsmouth for the first round of the Southern Area Youth Track Omnium Series. The Omnium meeting tests riders over five different events on the fixed gear and no brakes style of bikes favoured by Olympic track stars such as Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins.

The Portsmouth event was attended by over 70 young riders from across the region and included a 9 strong team from Hillingdon. Slipstreamers showed their class by finishing as overall winners in the under 16 boys, under 14 boys, under 10 boys and under 14 girls age categories, which was all of the age categories for which they had entered riders.

The day began well with all riders putting in good performances in the time trials against the clock. Carl Jolly (under 10) and Dan Maslin (under 14) were the fastest in their age categories, with Dan recording a time that would have put him amongst the top under 16 riders.

Everyone was treated to an exciting programme of events with three of the Slipstreamers’ overall winners only decided on their final race. Martin Dawkins (under 6) ended the day 5 points clear of the second rider after a tremendous effort in the final race of the day, while Natalie Hill (under 14 girls) chased her nearest rival down to record a well deserved victory.

The team is now looking forward to the remaining Omnium meetings being held over the next few weeks at Welwyn, Brighton and Herne Hill.
