The road race was my favourite part of Club Champs as the conditions were so wet and windy which made it hard to ride.  Winning in those conditions made it feel like a great achievement.

You should have a go because it is fun, you get to race against the best in the club and it helps you get experience for other events.

The time trial as I have been getting quite good times in the last few months, and it was interesting to see how I did compared to people my age.

It is a great experience of competing in races and do the disciplines you enjoy. However it is also a good opportunity to perhaps try ones that you haven’t really tried.

Great, because I have never won before; but even more so because being a mountain biker I feel like I have beaten the odds!

What was your absolute favourite Club Champs highlight this year?
I enjoyed the MTB race because I am proud of the fact that I managed to come back from last place due to a mechanical, and ride through the copious amounts of mud to take the win. And also just because mountain biking is a superior sport 🙂

What would you say to encourage Members to give Club Champs a go next year?
Just do it, whether it’s for the challenge or even simply to try something different. Or for fun! You don’t have to be the best and you don’t have to win. So go for it – and you might find yourself on top of the podium!

U16 Girls Club Champ - Savannah Hewson

How does it feel to be the Club Champion Savannah?
Pretty good, although that if I want to be it again next year I will have to keep up with training with all the U14s moving up in to my age category!

What was your absolute favourite Club Champs highlight this year?
As crazy as it sounds, probably the road race, even though the weather was atrocious. It was the most exciting as it was the first event that I was also riding with the boys making it fast and more interesting and then coming third overall, behind Josh and Sam!

What would you say to encourage Members to give Club Champs a go next year?
You never know who will win on the day because you don’t know who will turn up; and if everyone thinks that they won’t win so don’t turn up, no one will win. You may be the only one to attend, a competitor may have had an unfortunate accident and cannot ride, or it might be a race with less than a second separating first and second place. You should always turn up and ride and not lose faith, as well as have fun!

U16 Girls - Runners Up
  • 2nd Place: Lorna Bowler
  • 3rd Place: Elsa Kristiansson
U16 Boys Club Champ - Josh Copley

How does it feel to be the Club Champion Josh?
It feels amazing!  At the start of the year one of my goals was to be the first U16 to have my name on the trophy twice!  So after my big races of the year, I prolonged going into the off season mode to do a few more intervals and maintain peak form, so I’m really pleased it has all paid off.

What was your absolute favourite Club Champs highlight this year?
My highlight was in the road race, the rain was pouring down and it was incredibly windy.  I had a front and rear deep rim in much to the worry of others. However, I felt confident. Three quarters of a lap in I attacked. Finishing the first lap with a smile from ear to ear smile as I soaked up the rain and the pain!  I ended up lapping all but one rider (I almost caught him too!).

What would you say to encourage Members to give Club Champs a go next year?
Get stuck in,  the races are really friendly.  If you are worried about being so close to others at speed but need to deal with your competitiveness then try the time trial first. Simply ride as fast as you can to see who is best between you and your mates!  This is my very favourite discipline.
