Last Saturday it happened. A very cold day and damp air meant we had a snow flurry just before we started the A/B’s early session. It wasn’t heavy enough to call snow, but was wet and icy enough to create a slush on the circuit, that is no way friendly to a performance session. Rather than give in, the Spirit D’Slipstreamer kicked in and we all retired to the classroom for some roller and turbo work.

If you remember back to the recent survey, this is one of the things that riders asked for – so of course, we are only too happy to oblige.

We have access to spare turbos, but it’s always better to bring your own along, as it helps us match turbos with the right bikes. So, we quickly got everyone set up and pedalling. Then it was a case of removing excess clothing, removing jackets, gloves and even helmets. A base layer is ideal for a turbo session – you will sweat! Always good to have a spare, because once we start out in the cold again, a wet base layer next to skin is not at all pleasant.

Dodge the snow - use the turbo!

We then went through the World Class Warm Up, followed by a ramping set, and the grand finale of a very well executed set of a Russian Pyramid. Ralph, Simon and Sam were always on hand to tweak resistance settings to make sure the riders received the adequate amount of pain and suffering training.

We received good feedback. Those who had not been to a structured turbo session felt they had worked harder than normal, and a group session that is coach led stops it from becoming tedious.

Please note that this will be a bad weather option – so please be prepared. Remember to pop a spare base layer and a towel in your kit bag. And don’t forget your drinks!
